The Special Interest Group on International Information Issues (SIG-III) of the American Society for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) announced its competition for papers. The theme for this year’s paper contest is: "Navigating Streams in a Global Information Ecosystem". Topics include the following areas: “(1) Intercultural Information Ethics: Critical reflection on the ethical challenges related to the global and cross-cultural production, storage, and distribution of information, as well as the ethical dimensions of the global development and implementation of information systems, infrastructures, and policies. (2) Information Behaviour: Information needs, information seeking, information gaps and sense-making in various contexts including work, interests or every-day life activities by individuals or groups. (3) Knowledge Organization: Indexing, index construction, indexing languages, thesaurus construction, terminology, classification of information in any form, tagging (expert, user-based, automatic), filtering, metadata, standards for metadata, information architecture. (4) Information Systems, Interactivity and Design: How people use and communicate with information systems; the design, use and evaluation of interactive information technologies and systems, including interfaces and algorithms; search and retrieval, browsing, visualization, personalization. (5) Information and Knowledge Management: Information and knowledge creation, transfer and use at the personal, group, organizational and societal levels. The management of the processes and systems that create, acquire, organize, store, distribute, and use information and/or knowledge. (6) Information Use: How people re-purpose existing knowledge from a variety of sources (scientific, humanities, news, family, friends, colleagues), forms (articles, books, video, audio, tweets), locations (work, home, in transit) and mediums (cell-phones, PDAs, digital libraries) to advance knowledge, solve problems, improve information literacy, and learn. (7) Information and Society: Economic, Political, Social Issues: Copyright issues, policies and laws; national and international information policies; privacy and security; economics of information, personal rights vs. freedom of information; surveillance; globalization and the flows of information; computerization movements; and social informatics

Next Generation of SAGE Journals Online –in progress

The upgrade of the SAGE Journals Online platform is currently in progress.  All 560+ SAGE journals will be migrated individually onto the next generation platform, supported by HighWire Press’ “2.0” technology (H2O). New features and functionality will include:

گفتنی است جشنواره ملی حرکت، جشنواره ای است که از طرف وزارت علوم، تحقیقات و فناوری برگزار می شود و عملکرد انجمن های علمی دانشجویی، مورد بررسی قرار می گیرد و انجمن علمی برتر، برگزیده می شود.

هدف از برگزاري سومین جشنواره ملي حركت عبارتست از: نمايه‌سازي آثار، توليدات و دستاوردهاي انجمن‌  های علمي در دانشگاه هاي دولتي و تعداد بسياري انجمن علمي دانشجويي در حال فعاليت تحت نظر دانشگاه پيام نور، جامع علمي ـ كاربردي؛ مديريت دانش و منابع اطلاعاتي توليد شده در انجمن هاي علمي دانشجويي دانشگاههاي دولتي و غيردولتي؛ شناسايي، معرفي و تقدير از انجمن هاي علمي دانشجويي برگزيده در عرصه‌هاي آموزشي، ترويجي، پژوهشي، فناوري، اختراع و ابتكار، كارآفريني، نشريات علمي دانشجويي؛ شناسايي معرفي و تقدير از شركتهاي دانشجويي صنايع كارآفرين،مدیران مخترع پژوهشگر ، خیرین برگزیده صنعت و دانشگاه؛ ايجاد فن‌بازار و نمايشگاه دستاوردهاي انجمن‌هاي علمي دانشجويي در كنار صنايع به منظور تقويت پيوندها ميان صنعت، جامعه و دانشگاه و تلاش به منظور فرهنگ‌سازي در اين مسير.

این جشنواره از 20 تا 22 اردیبهشت ماه 1389 در دانشگاه تهران برگزار شد.

در چهاردهمن دورۀ پایان نامۀ سال دانشجویی و در چهاردهمین دورۀ اهدا نشان علمی علامه بها الدین عاملی (شیخ بهایی)، پایان نامۀ سرکارخانم سپیده فهیمی فر، با عنوان " سنجش معیارهای ارزیابی کتابهای الکترونیکی از دیدگاه دانشجویان تحصیلات دانشگاه الزهرا (س) و کتابداران دانشگاه های دولتی شهر تهران" برگزیده اعلام شده است. استاد راهنما، جناب آقای دکتر غائبی و استاد مشاور،  جناب آقای دکتر تاجداران بوده است.

این مراسم در روز دوشنبه 10 خرداد برگزار می گردد.

We’re all looking for new, shinier, and better ways to promote ourselves to our customers. Or perhaps just a way to reduce the mass of paper signage. Usually, we think BIG- giant flat screens at entrances and service points flashing the latest event information or latest new materials…

Instead of a ginormous flat screen why not try digital photo frames at your service points? Digital photo frames are CHEAP these days and will allow you to scroll through those static images promoting your program showtimes, upcoming events, new materials, reminders about dvd’s or databases, or even photos from your last exciting event! $50-$100 will buy you a good 7-10 inch frame that you can easily add images to.

If iPads and other new mobile computers catch on, libraries might not need to offer rooms full of computers for students to do their research, writing, and Facebooking. But if that happens, will students have any reason left to visit the library?

That's the provocative question posed by Brian Mathews, assistant university librarian at the University of California at Santa Barbara, on his blog this week.

The trend in the last few years was to add more computers to the library, creating spaces often called "information commons." And during that time, visits to the library have increased greatly. "I think the key to our current success has been the computers," Mr. Mathews says on his blog.

 طبق روال سال هاي گذشته اقدام به برگزاري كارگاه­ هاي آموزشي در بيست و سومين

 نمايشگاه كتاب تهران كرده­  است.

این کارگاهها هر روز از ساعت 10 تا ساعت 12.30 در زیر زمین شبستان، سالن فعالیت های

 جنبی، سرای اهل قلم، سالن کارنامه نشر برگزار می شود.

شرکت در این کارگاه ها برای کلیه علاقمندان آزاد است و همچنین گواهي شركت در دوره

از طرف خانه كتاب و انجمن علمي علوم كتابداري و اطلاع­رساني ايران ارائه خواهد شد.

On April 21, Overdrive announced a free audiobook app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, available now in the Apple App Store.

From the announcement: "With OverDrive® Media ConsoleTM for iPhone, users can now wirelessly download MP3 audiobooks from OverDrive-powered library and retail websites to their Apple® device. Audiobooks for over-the-air download are available from more than 10,000 libraries worldwide."

Has anyone out there tried this? I don't have the requisite device so I can't give it a test-run. This strikes me as huge news. If anyone reading this tries the app out, please post results in the comments.

Book - Record Store Days: From Vinyl to Digital and Back Again

The authors of Record Store Days: From Vinyl to Digital and Back Again (Sterling, $19.95), published to coincide with Saturday's third nationwide Record Store Day, ponder the past, present and future of record shops through the views of musicians, industry executives, store clerks and fans. The pair discovered that, while record stores have dwindled in the digital age, they remain a vital hub for music fiends and collectors who find the downloading experience a tad lonely.

Here’s a quick review of the iPad. I’ve had it for a few days now and, based on what I know so far, it isn’t going to be a very important part of my life. It has great capabilities, but it has real limitations. The capsule summary is “not as good for straight text ereading as a Kindle; fabulous for visual stuff like movies and pictures and games (which I don’t play) but limited there by not supporting Flash.”

So far, I’ve watched a movie (using the Netflix app here might be the biggest payoff here for me with it, but I’m usually not big on movies out of theaters), gotten books from three platforms (Kindle, Kobo, and, of course, the iBook store), grabbed the Elements book-app (cool…). I also got a Vook (Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde), which was enough for me to see “not my cup of tea.” Maybe others on other subjects will be different…better. This one was both just not appealing (a clip introducing John Barrymore embedded in the first page of the story) and defective (a bunch of links that don’t work.)
